Sustainability: Our Journey to Net Zero
Our roadmap to Net Zero relies on reducing our controllable
emissions and accelerating the timelines for decarbonising our
supply chain.
We have set targets that reflect the nature of our business around the political and environmental considerations for our operating and distribution sites that set us up to be a forerunner of environmental considerations and sustainability within the refractory sector.
The Mayerton decarbonisation roadmap will reduce scope 1 & 2 emissions by 70% in 2030 and total emissions by 97% in 2060.

Sustainability Roadmap: 4 Key Strategy Pillars
Our Operations
By investing in low carbon technology such as electric forklifts, heat exchangers, LED lighting and solar panels we can reduce our Scope 1 by over 70% and Scope 2 by 10%.

Our Materials
We are reviewing our materials with our technical and R&D team, reformulating, introducing recycled materials and looking at new innovative sources of raw materials.

Our Partners
We are committed to supporting our customers’ switch to more sustainable production processes. We are also incentivising our supply chain to decarbonise.

On to 2060

Modelling the CO2 impact of refractory linings for better decision-making

We have developed computer models to calculate the carbon footprint of any given refractory lining.
We have also developed a second model to take into consideration the performance of the lining. This then provides a refractory CO2 per tonne of liquid steel. In this way we can optimise the lining campaign to minimise the lifetime carbon footprint of the lining.
We are committed to supporting our customers’ switch to more sustainable production

The steel industry is undergoing a huge transformation involving major process changes that will pose new challenges for the steel industry and refractory producers.
Whilst refractories are only a small part of today’s steelmaking carbon footprint, it will become an increasingly significant part as the steel industry decarbonises their processes.
